9 Month Checkup
It has been hard to update our kids' milestones. There are so many excuses Mommy won't even name here. But she will try her best to update them. Time flies. Elana
had her 9 month checkup on Friday (08/06/10) and she weighed in at 18lbs 9oz and 27.5 inches long.
That puts her in about 50% in weight and 50% in height
which is an average growth for a baby girl (according to her doctor).
Her first week of the 5th month was marked down with a viral infection with a
fever up to 104.0 degrees fahrenheit.
It ran its ourse over 3 days. She was so miserable and so was Mommy. What a nightmare that was. Most of time Elana is a happy baby unles her skins bothers her.
However her skin is getting so much better that Mommy is surprisingly happy about it.
Elana does not crawl or schooch. She just sits then pulls back and then lies down on her stomach and rolls over to her destination with several rolls. She has not developed
the fear, so she would put everyting tiny thing into her mouth even bugs. Her hair looks like it has grown more from the previous photos. Elana eats really well and hence the chubbier body. Her face has changed a lot since she was born, and continues to change.
Her upper two teeth are coming along, and that counts for total of 4 teeth.
That's it for now until next time. Enjoy the photos.

Cutesy

|
|
Every minute of every day is the perfect moment for Mommy to capture all your cutesy together, and each of you have some cute moments such as these. Mommy has to admit that you two are so adorably cute that you make your parents, grandparents, friends and even your neighbors very proud. The crankiest people would put a smile on their faces if they could see how cute your two are. Mommy could only get these moments once in a while since it does not happen all the time. One is constantly moving energetically and doesn't like being photographed, and the other one is curious of everything and is not aware of being photographed.

First Two Little Cute Teeth!

|
|
Mommy wants to write so much, but she finds no time to write. She just wants to post some photos of Elana with her first two litte cute teeth showing.
Elana is growing up very fast and learning new things everyday. Photos taken on July 17, 2010. Enjoy and will write something more next time.

Field Trip To La Habra Children's Museum
Ethan's school had another field trip to La Habra Children's Museum. Mommy decided to let him
participate one more trip as part of the fun in the summer. This museum is more like a interactive play house that you don't need to worry to
have to clean up all the toys and mess afterwards. The kids will take turn to explore and play with different activities in several small
exhibits. There is only one tiny science theme room is meant for
educational purpose. Other rooms are more like in door playyard activities. Regardless of educational learning, as long as Ethan had fun and enjoyed the activities, that was all it mattered. By seeing these photos you obviously can see which exhibit he had the most fun. He spent most of his time at the toddler exhibit where he climbed on the tree house several times
and got a chance to
drive the real model of OTCA bus. One thing Mommy did not like was the very one stuffed animal sitting by the entrance. It's probably there for older children to learn the taxidermy. It looks really creepy and made her not want to touch it (forgot to take photo). Another interesting exhibit was also Ethan's favorite room. They have model trains and Thomas the Train
model running through tiny and cute villages. Ethan was so thrilled seeing all those trains with the hope that he could touch them. Unfortunately, they were all in the glass gate for viewing only. Just so to let
you know, he is a big fan of trains. Every time when we stop at the amtrack railroad for the train to pass, he would delightfully cheer for it.
Overall Mommy would strongly recommend if you have never been there. It is a good place for kiddies' time.

Elana @ 8 Month Photos

|
|
While Mommy was editing Elana's photos for posting, she went through Elana's newborn pictures and then newborn pictures of Ethan. And she couldn't help getting all emotional all of a sudden.
So blessed and thankful for her wonderful children. Elana just turned 8 months old on July 4th. Time flies...

Field Trip to Jurupa Mountains Cultural Center (07/09/10)
Today Ethan joined his school to go on the field trip to Jurupa Mountains Cultural Center.
Mommy wanted him to get diffrent experiences in different places other than
just going to the amusement parks or the zoo. He was very excited experiencing himself
riding on a big school bus. The center is a very interesting place which seems to be located
in a secluded spot. It has a gigantic warehouse with all the rocks, minerals, and fossils.
Mommy felt that this place is much better for older kids because it does not have a lot of hands-on activities other than just viewing the different dinosaurs, learning about the fossils and rocks. The only fun part for Ethan was to collect some amazing rocks to take home as souvenir. Mommy also had fun participating along with the kids. She finally learned all the basic dinosaur names and pronounced them correctly. Can you distinguish and say Tyrannasaurus Rex, Brontosaurus, Velociraptor, and Teradactal hehe. Will try to teach Ethan these names to see if he could manage to say them.
Overall Ethan had a good time with this field trip, and hopefully it was a good experience for him as he got exposed to the new learning experience.

Happy Fourth of July Everyone!
We hope all of you had a happy 4th of July and a great vacation time. Last year we said that
we will bring Ethan to the park this year to watch fireworks, but the schedule did not work out.
We celebrated the 4th of July in our backyard. Hopefully next year we could all go the park together. This 4th of July's weather was really nice, nicer than the last couple of years.
Ethan seems to understand and enjoy watching
fireworks as he held and controlled the firework sparklers. It was so cute of him to ask Mommy if she enjoyed the fireworks as he saw them from
the neighbors with different colors. He kept talking so much about them as in how big they are, the loud noise and the color. On the other hand, Elana was very curious to
see things around her instead of being fearful. Fun moment was short but we all had a good, cozy and sizzling night.
By the way, Ethan just got a new haircut, the spiky style for the summer.

Half Day at Los Angeles Zoo (06/26/10)
We needed only half day activity so we decided to go to LA zoo again because of the free admission. This is the
second time we visited the zoo, but the last year construction was still annoyingly there. Actually there were more construction this time. It's a good thing that they are investing and renovating the zoo during these tough economic times. However everywhere was still unorganized and very hard to look for the animals around. We tried to spot them for the kids to see, but there were very few animal. We only got good viewing to see gorilla, ostrich, and anaconda.
Ethan was not really excited to see them as we explained to him what the animals were doing. For some reasons, we feel that the animals are very depressed and unhappy to stay at this exhibit. What we got from the trip was a good exercise to push
the strollers through the hills. And the fun part was to see how Ethan and Elana enjoyed the time on the 25 minute tram which we went on for two times as Ethan's wish.
For price wise, it would be a nice place to spend the day with kids.

The Graduation of the Kindergarten Class
Just attended the graduation of the kindergarten class in Ethan's school today (06/22/10). It was fun being there and witnessing the kids singing great songs.
Ethan's class was part of the graduation program. This is the second time he got on the stage and performed.
He had a blast with the performance. His class got the opportunity to sing three songs.
One of the song was ABC song which he already knew by heart. It was also so adorable to see them dance in a circle with the music.
Lovely musics and great songs added to the atmosphere of the graduation ceremony. Mommy enjoyed Mr.Tom King's speech, Mayor of City of Walnut.
Part of his speech, he suggested the parents to take more pictures for their kids because, once we know it, they will grow up way to fast just like us.
His speech also implied that childhood does not wait, so we should take any opportunity to teach the kids everything we possibly can and don't just
let time slip away. Mommy could feel the tears of pride and joy of other parents whose children were graduating. They were just so happy
and proud of their children. Congratulations to all the graduates and good luck to you all to the next step to your grade school.

Elana @ 7 Months
At 7 months old, Elana is not really that much mobil other than mastered
rolling over back and forth and several times wherever possible. Her hands are now her best friend. She has fun playing with them and sometimes tries to suck it. She is now learning how to sit up on her own without falling over.
Elana does well with solid food. She loves pretty much
everything that Mommy has fed her so far even broccoli. She is eating 3 meals a day, sometimes
with snacks here and there. Mommy makes her own baby food. It is more work but so worth it. Elana drinks anywhere from 20-30oz of milk in 24-hour period,
not a lot as to compared with Ethan when he was 7 months.
But she eats really well thus she becomes more chunky. Perhaps the camera adds more pounds on her. When you see her in person, Elana is a small baby.
In fact, she had her 6 month checkup on May 24th and weighed in at 19lbs and 27 inches long. Elana is laughing, babbling and smiling a lot more lately, and that means she is now a true baby.

About Her Aries Child - A Natural-Born Leader

|
Mommy thought she might want to post the characteristics
about her Aries Child after reading it in here. Again, the Aries Child is so every interesting as well as her Scorpio child.
- possess a passionate, creative, and restless nature (will see if it's true in the future)
- "me first" attitude (so true but isn't that true for all kids?)
- epic temper tantrums.(sort of)
- hard time keeping their emotions under control but don't hold a grudge. Once the fireworks are over, so is their anger (this is good)
- are great at starting grand projects but not as keen on sticking with them, you'll
need to be patient as you guide your child gently but firmly, helping him stay on track (role for parents)

An Amazing Headband!
 |
|
Mommy found the the headband and the flower clip on the clearance rack at Claire's.
Total was $4.75. She then sewed them together for 20 minutes. And it became an amazing headband. So watch out for it :P By the way,
Mommy can't take her eyes off the photos.

About Her Scorpio Child - Private and Mysterious
Just read this article online and thought it’s so interesting because, as her parent, “you may never learn all about what makes your little Scorpio tick because these children rarely reveal everything.”
Scorpio children are strong-willed, passionate, and intense
, and the need to feel secure drives them to control themselves and others.
A strong, durable emotional connection is one of their primary needs, but, perversely,
they may test the durability of that connection, often without realizing they are doing so. Your Scorpio child may seem by turns affectionate, aloof, devoted, obsessive, loving, and manipulative.
Scorpios have such range and depth of feeling that you may sense that your child is expressing only the top layer of her true feelings-- and that you could understand her a lot better if only she'd let you in on the secret.
Scorpio children thrive on the mysteries of life and have a knack for understanding others' motivations. They might love reading suspense stories or
watching horror flicks from an early age, and they'll be drawn to complex friendships that really stretch them.
It's all too easy for Scorpio children to be drawn into obsessive, vindictive, and controlling behavior, so be sure to teach your child about the importance
of forgiveness as well as forging balanced relationships with other people.
If you guide her carefully, you can help your Scorpio child develop
interests that will benefit the world at large, as she brings her focus, willpower, and determination to bear."
Can't wait for her teenager years!

Half a Year Old

|
|
Finally Mommy got a chance to push out this post. Elana turned six months on May 4th and has been already
eating solid food. The fun and excitement is back when making the food for Elana. It's all about yummy and healthy vegetables and fruits.
Surprisingly she loves green bean mixed with yellow squash the most. She hasn't been too thrilled with carrot or sweet potato or avocado.
Perhaps it's mostly just her trying to get used to something new that feels so different from milk.
Elana is starting to respond to her name now as well. Since she has been mastered rolling over like a pro, she prefers to
sleep on her stomach and will always flip within 5 minutes when laying down for the sleep. It is sometimes still hard to control where her face goes because she likes to sleep facedown.
So she often gets red spot on her cheek or her forehead where it has been pressing against the mattress. She is only a 6 month little person, but Mommy could already see that she is growing into a Miss Personality
and will soon become Mommy’s mutterings.

Heartwarming Photos

|
|
Just took theses photos today (05/16/10). Can't believe they grow up so quick. It has always been difficult to take pictures
of the kids together. Elana is still a baby, so Mommy has no problem taking pictures of her. But Ethan's age has become
so hard to photograph. He is very impatient to sit still. Mommy often bribes him something so that he can cooperate for a photograph. Sometimes it works out, and some other time giving him something is not always a
a solution at all. However, she was able to capture their silly moments at the end of each photoshoot luckily. Hopefully these memories will be
cherished in the future for the kids when they look back to these photos.

Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms

|
A friend sent Mommy some very intersting quotes on the Mother's Day. Just want to post here to share with you. And Happy Mother’s Day to all moms.
"When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child."
"Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever."
"We never know the love of the parent until we become parents ourselves." (This is so true)
"My mom is a never-ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune."
"The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness."

Elana @ 27 Weeks !

|
|
Just want to keep track of the day (04/16/10) that Elana finally has mastered of rolling over from
her back to her tummy. Although Mommy has already seen the same development in Ethan, she still
enjoys watching Elana flipping over every time she does it. At the beginning Elana would immediately roll over every
time she is on her back. It scares Mommy that Elana rolls over in the middle of the night to sleep but cant get back over
yet, and her face is half in the mattress.
Elana would also get very upset when she
couldn't roll over if Mommy rolls up the blanket and places on the side when she rolls. But it is good to see that she finally has learned her directions and become a master of it.

Modeling @ the Fifth Month !

|
|
Just want to share some pictures that Mommy took today (04/10/10). Elana is beginning her fifth month. And she has not rolled over completely yet. In order to get her smiling or laughing, Mommy had to pretend to sneeze or
do something silly so that she can get her smiling for the photos. Enjoy the photos.

Elana @ 19 Weeks !

|
|
Mommy took these photos when Elana was 19 weeks. She had her 4 month checkup on Friday, March 19th. She
weighed in at 15 pounds and was 24 inches. Other than her dry skin problem, everything else looks great. The doctor told us to
cut out her bath time because it will remove the natural oil of her skin. So we gave her bath only once a week, and
we can see that her skin gets much better. Elana also laughs more when you make silly sounds. Her laughter will be
in response to us when we make funny faces or say nonsense things. It just feels so great that we get the giggles together these days.

Ethan's First Time Easter Egg Hunt

|
|
Ethan had his first time Easter Egg hunt at school on Friday. At first he did not know what he was supposed to do. However, as soon as he saw other kids squatting to pick up eggs, he immediately ran off to the yard and pick those colorful eggs. It was funny that he eyes were dazzled as he learned that there were goodies and candy inside those eggs. He told Mommy it was trick or treat candy. She got a good giggle from that. Happy Spring, everybody!

|
Happy Birthday, Ethan !

|
|
Sunday, March 21 was the day the Ethan turned 3. Mommy noticed that for the past 2 weeks, something miraculously happens inside him. He is more cooperative and helpful than ever. He
wants to see and does everything on his own. More importantly he feels more at ease although sometimes he still has some setbacks. However, fo the most part, he is more friendly, so talkative, extremely helpful and CUTE. Ethan is also learning a lot of new words (Vietnamese and English) and making more improvements in pronunciation. He speaks with more complete sentences now. Love it when he is always the one who initiates the conversation (best part).
Happy Birthday, Ethan! Please stay as CUTE as this age forever :D

Ethan Turns 3 Years Old!

|
So Ethan had his 3rd birthday celebration. He had so much fun sharing his birthday with friends in school. This year he can understand more of what’s going on, so he did enjoy all the attention. It is also a big milestone for him that he gets to move to the next class. The food served was chicken nuggets from Burger King. Can't believe that all the kids love it so much. Wish you could see the way they enjoyed food. Some of the kids finished all of it, including Ethan.
Happy Birthday, Ethan! Keep continuing growing smart, fun, cute, and chatty (not only at home but in school also) !

Spring is Coming!

|
|
Mommy is not a big fan of taking close-up pictures of flowers. Today while venturing out to her forgotten small backyard,
she realized
that Spring flowers are coming. So she decided to give it a try to capture the blooming of these flowers. It was relatively easy to take photo of flowers. Good thing that flowers don't move. She usally doesn't pay close attention to see what type of flowers in her yard, but this afternoon those flowers did cheer her up.
Can't wait for the nex few months with full of outdoor activites for the kids. ( Elana @ 18 Weeks & Ethan is 3 )

Elana Modeling @17 Weeks
 |
|
Just want to share some Elana's pictures that Mommy just took today 3/14/10. She is still very limited posing on her own. Mommy
had to keep changing the angles, standing up, laying down or shooting upward in order to get good pictures. But
it didn't matter at all. These are how the
pictures finally turned out. Enjoy !

Elana @ the Fourth Month
 |
Just read the article "Boys vs. Girls: Who's Harder to Raise". So very interesting. And this is the conclusion
of the article : "The bottom line? On balance, the general consensus seems to be that boys are more of a handful early on, and girls more challenging beginning
in the preteen years, Which means that, as the mom of daughters who are 12, 9, and 7,
I have the next ten years cut out for me!" Don't know if the verdict is right. But so far Mommy has spent a lot of time and angry on Ethan. And he is still a handful and still a baby although he will be 3 years old next week.
Elana seems much more easy going than he was when he was a baby. Now she is in the fourth month.
She could sleep up to six hours straight at night and does not complain much. She feels so content most of
the time. So Mommy believes that each gender has its own toughness down the road. Can't wait to their teenagers years.

|
Elana @ 15 Weeks!
Some friends told Mommy that second baby will be easier since Mommy already has experience. Somewhat she
agrees that it is true. To her, she feels that having a second baby takes her multi-tasking to a whole
new and different level.
She used to be able to cater to only Ethan's needs. And now Elana needs her just as much as Ethan.
Elana is still a stationary baby for now, but that won't stay long. She will soon need more attention and on the move. So far, Elana is doing
great. She is not only a great napper but also a very good sleeper during night time. One of her many nap times is about
three hours. At night time, she falls alseep by herslelf amazingly.
Mommy couldn't ask for anything else better than that. Keep it up, Elana!
Enjoy her photos @ 15 weeks.

Happy Lunar New Year, Year of Tiger 2010!
 |
|
Today is the first day of Tet (Lunar New Year). Valentine's Day is also celebrated.
This year is the year of Tiger. According to Chinese Astrology Calendar, 2010 is the Year of Metal/White Tiger, which also means
that all your wildest dreams can come true because Tiger is a powerful animal. We don't really do much in our family, aside from going to the temple on
the first day to pray our good wishes. We gathered and enjoy the good meal together. On the Threshold of a New Year, wishing you all the best for the new coming year,
plenty of good health, and money flow in like water. And Happy Valentine's Day.

Just want to post some birthday photos of Grandpa. Granpa, Happy Birthday to you with lots of good health and long life and happiness.

Elana @ 13 Weeks
 |
|
Elana is 13 weeks. She finally figured out the whole day and night issues and started to sleep through the night with longer hours without waking up for several meals. Mommy only wakes up 1 or sometimes 2 times here and there for her meal or to check on her. Keep it up, Elana!
Apart from feasting on her fists all the time, she also begins blowing bubbles. That's her entertainment if no one plays with her.
It's so cute to see when she does it.

Week in Photos of Ethan and Elana
 |
|
Mommy took these photos when she got home from a long working day. She was tired and sleepy after returning to work from a long break. But she can't possibly deny the happy look on her kids' faces. So she grabbed the camera and took these photos immediately. Enjoy the photos.

Modeling @ 3 Months
 |
|
Elana will be 3 months in the next few days. Mommy wants to give her a better view of what's
going on other than facing up all the time. So Mommy has been placing Elana on her stomach lately. It is
also a chance for Mommy to take pictures of Elana with different positions. Elana was
was frighten for a few times when being placed on her stomach. But she has to get used to with it eventually.
So far she is doing good at most of everything and smiles at everyone she meets.

Playtime is Coming Soon!
 |
|
A friend of Mommy recently told her to enjoy her baby now because these years will never come back.
It's totally true, isn't it?
Elana is growing into the month 4. That means playtime is starting and more fun is coming soon. She is more responsive now and
already begins making vowel sounds like ooh and aah. Unlike Ethan, Elana is a
very sound sleeper. She could sleep through all the noises even while Ethan is playing. But her sucking reflex is still so strong. And Mommy won't let her take the pacifier. When Ethan was little, Mommy would pick him up every time he cried.
It was painful to watch him sob alone and cry himself to sleep. However, this time Mommy decided not to respond
immediately to Elana's every cry. Mommy gradually wait a little longer before
picking her up when she cries. She believes it will be a discipline for both of us.

New Achievement
Just want to post some updates about Ethan. He finally gives up his lovey when he goes to school now. All teachers surprisingly applauded for his amazing achievement in the new year. However he stills needs it
at bed time for self-comforting. Ethan speaks in complete sentences now and uses possessive correctly (of course in Vietnamese). He is still
learning English in school. He is a little behind the kids who are only learning to speak one language, but hopefully once he gets the hang of both languages he will be fully bilingual and at an advantage hehe. He is indeed trying to speak some English at home. Sometimes he wants to speak it in a full sentence but does not have enough vocabularies, so he ends up mixing the 2 languages. Mommy was not sure if he was early in his learning abc and identifying colors and numbers. But when Ethan
was around 20 months, he was able to recognize 24 letters. At first Mommy thought it was just rote memorization, but surprisingly he was able to say the letters when Mommy randomly picked any of them. And gradually he can also identify differences in shape and size. He can also name basic colors including gray and silver. Daddy keeps saying that Ethan seems to be growing into a smart boy hehehe. Way to go, Ethan!

2 Month Checkup and Growing
 |
|
Elana had her 2-month checkup on Jan 6th and she weighed in at 11 lbs and was 21 1/2" and also got her first round of immunizations (3 shots). The doctor said she is average size for a baby girl. Good to hear that. And everything else looks great. Way to grow, Elana! Recently she has been smiling a lot more and also is starting to "talk" to people more. That is also the reason that Mommy could take so many cute photos of her. For the past 3 days Elana slept for 5 hours straight at night. Mommy is so thankful for a nice long block of sleep.
|
|
|
Elana @ 2 Months and Smiling
 |
|
|
Isn't she truly a beautiful little doll hehe? It's okay if you keep awing and complimenting when seeing these pictures :D Thank you! BTW, a friend of Mommy said that Elana looks like she was working on some "serious business" in all photos , but not anymore with these ones.
|
|
Elana @ 7 Weeks
 |
|
So far Elana is doing very good, not much fussing, crying, or any other problem. Mommy
is so glad that her baby acne is now totally disappeared, and her perfect soft skin is coming back. For the past few days, she develops the crying
pattern in the late evenings and asks to be held. But when she gets settle, she seems to sleep longer. And for the past three days, she has a a stretch of four or five hours of sleep at night. Very awesome, Elana !
Here's a few shots of her at seven weeks. Mommy just loves the headband. It was a gift from her friend at work. And it actually left an impression in Elana's head for an hour. So Mommy will need to buy her more bows and headbands. |

Ethan's Christmas 2009
 |
|
This year Ethan really had a very delighted response to the whole present opening things. Since October, he
kept insisting to open those presents each day as he walked by
the Christmas tree and caught his eyes on them.
Mommy was so surprised
that he had the patience to wait for almost two months to finally open all of them.

Elana's 1st Christmas!
 |
|
Just realized that Elana was born in a festive time of year: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, and Lunar New Year. Isn't that nice?
So every year when it's her birthday, it will be around the holiday season and family time together.
|
|
|
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Today is Christmas Eve. It is now around 10:00 P.M. Mommy just woke up after the last feeding for Elana. She walked and looked around the house to see if anyone is still awake. They are all sleeping peacefully.
She remembers when she was in Vietnam, on Christmas Eve she usually gathered with her Dad and her brother to walk excitedly to Christian village to view Christmas lights and their decorations. Afterwards we went home and celeberated Christmas by eating boling tasty balut (an Asian delicacy egg) and went to bed happily. It sounds weird, doesn't it? But she loved it.
Mommy was raised Buddist, but since she came to the U.S., she celebrates Christmas with the spirit of giving and thanking and ebraces the US's biggest holiday. Time flies and another year goes by. This year is quite an eventful for her, that means abundant amount of her energy and effort are and being put to use. She is one of the many many lucky moms to have two adorable kids and very fortunate to have a wonderful family and friends and family members who support her unconditionally and wholeheartedly. She just wants to say thanks so much again to everybody. Have a very merry Christmas to you all and all a peaceful night.

Elana @ 6 weeks !
 |
|
Mommy's cousin keeps sending her messages that she wants to see more pictures of Elana.
Sometimes Elana is fussy or not in the mood to be photoed due to the fact that she has been having some baby acne.
Her skin becomes really red when she cries or fussy, but luckily the ance is beginning to disappear. Hopefully she will have her perfect and soft skin back soon.
Here is a few pictures of her at six weeks.

Ethan and His Lovely Attachment
 |
|
We don't remember since when Ethan has become attached deeply with his adorable pillow. He started to adopt this pillow since he was six months old. At that time it was no big deal at all because it gave him comfort. But since then this pillow has become his number one loving object. He calls it "gối bự" (big pillow although it's not that big). The bond with this "special" pillow is a bond like no other. If it is ever lost or goes missing, we just can't imagine how he would react. The pillow begins to wane now, and we did give him the new one to replace but he rejected. We have tried and are still trying to not let him take it anywhere and everywhere. However, we don't think he can give it up anytime soon. Here is a few shots of him going to school with his lovely "attachment" and the lunch bag. Enjoy the pictures.

|
Ethan's 2009 Winter Concert
It's been five months since Ethan started his pre-pre-school. It was a big change for him. But he's enjoying that change so far. However, he still has some tantrums here and there some times. It's very surprising that he brings a phrase (in English) home from school each day. He quite commonly now asks a question like "do you want some?" or "come and sit here" and will answer with a tone like "Yes? No?".
We also realized that Ethan has a good taste in music by singing songs. He could sing it all the way through for so many songs with correct rhythm and pitch. He also sings songs to us that he's been learning from school. The majority are Vietnamese songs and some toddler English songs that Mommy has been singing for him and teaching him . He also loves to change or mix the lyrics by using phrases that he talks everyday and sings repeatedly over and over . We all get a good giggle from that.
Ethan also had his family event winter concert in school. It was really cute to see all the kids in his class stood up in a straight line without crying and sang Christmas songs. Seeing him on the stage performing made us feel that we did the right thing to send him to school. And seeing these pictures doesn't last forever, however, that memory lasts forever in us.

Weeks in Pictures of Ethan and Elana...
 |
|
People say that a baby is a such a gift to the world and family. These precious
moments of Ethan and Elana's pictures embody the wonderful curiosity and cuteness
that they add to Mommy's day.

Elana's Full Month Celebration
 |
|
The one month celebration was great. We didn't invite that many people. There was just family members. And of course, the guest-of-honor slept through it all with so much loud noise and activities. Mommy was glad that she didn't cry much and behaved very well overall.
Ethan is unaware to what was going on behind him. Grandma did the offering. She prayed that Elana will eat well, be healthy, strong, grow fast, and obey the parents. Grandma also did the blessing that Elana will grow up, and everywhere she goes she will be loved by people. And
whenever she opens her mouth, there will be people that will fall in love with her. And when she goes to school, she will be a good student and will get beautiful and fragranced jobs. (Literal translation here..haha and it is very typical praying :D )

Elana @ 3 Weeks - Happy First Thanksgiving !
 |
|
Elana is changing everyday. She seems a bit more alert and awake now. The amazing thing she is different from Ethan when he was a baby is that she can sleep in a room that has a loud playing from Ethan or vacuuming from Daddy without waking up. On the other side, Mommy is exhausted from learning how to decode Elana's cries.
So..Elana had her first Thanksgiving. We had a really nice dinner with everybody including auntie Huong's family and Grandma. Ethan also had a playful time with everybody. BTW, Mommy will try to post more entries of him going to school. Ethan seemed to enjoy the food and pumpkin pie this year. However, Mommy still can't figure out why Ethan still thinks Trader Joe's Sparkling Cranberry Juice is wine and keeps asking for it although she corrects him several times.
|
|
|
Elana @ 2 weeks!
 |
|
Elana has been a decent baby since birth. Not much fussing, crying, or any other problem. We couldn't ask for more. Only Ethan finds himself wondering when he can play with his litle sister, who
often just looks around quietly. Her umbilical cord fell off at 6 days old. Not too stubborn huh.

Pregnancy Pictures at 37 Weeks.
 |
|
This post has been waited in the queue for such a long time. Today Nhi has a little time to get it out to you. We just wanted to say thank you so much to Brandon, a dear friend of Nhi from work, for spending the time and effort to take pregnancy pictures for her. She has never had any maternity pregnancy portrait taken, so the photo session was her golden opportunity. To her, pregnancy truly is an amazing time. Feeling that little life kick inside her is priceless.
Hopefully these pictures will reminisce herself and the time she spent preparing her baby for the world.

A Visit to Irvine Park Railroad
 |
|
We went to Irvine Park Railroad on the week ending of 09/27/09. It was hot, but fun. And we all enjoyed it. Ethan was very excited with all the activities there, especially the pony rides and train ride through beautiful historical Irvine Park. There was also a pumpkin patch with hundreds of pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, which you are sure to find the perfect one. However, we did not purchase any pumpkins at all since it was still too early for Halloween, and we didn't want the moldy mess before the end of the month. Overall, we highly recommend Irvine Park Railroad. It is truly an event that is fun for the entire family!

Ethan's Little Sister is Coming Soon !!!
 |
|
Many of you know that Ethan's little sister is coming soon. Mommy and Daddy are extremely excited although Mommy is a little nervous because they will be bringing home a second baby in less than three months. That sounds just around the corner. Some days Mommy feels like she cant handle one child, and the thought of bringing home another baby makes her very anxious. With Ethan, the excitement was in the lead. But with the second baby, she basically knew what to expect and she is nervous being responsible for two children. However, she is very thankful each day to the Buddha and her ancestor for blessing her family with another blessing from heaven. Hopefully the second one is another relaxing and enjoyable experience.

An Afternoon at Raging Waters, San Dimas
 |
|
We have never been to Raging Waters although we live locally near San Dimas for a long time. Since we had the free admission, we decided to check it out on a fun filled afternoon of water and sun. Mommy wasn't really impressed with the park at all. The parking situation was ridiculous and expensive. However, Ethan had a fun, relaxing and soaking good time. He had such a blast.

A Day at the Beach!
 |
|
We hope you all had a great July 4th weekend. We decided to head off to the beach to just enjoy the sites and the breeze for that day. Ethan enjoyed very much playing in the sand and water, although he only got his feet into the cold water. We also watched some fireworks. It was so loud and so brilliant for him. This year he was very ecstatic to see it.
It was almost like he was mesmerized. Looking at him as how he enjoyed the fireworks, Mommy realized that before the motherhood, she always laughed at parents who said that they often found more enjoyment watching their kids’s enjoyment. But now she thinks she is beginning to understand.

Mr. 27 month old!
 |
Wow!!! Mommy hasn't visited this page in a really long time,
and just realised that the last update was 2 months ago. This sure seems to be the norm for her nowadays. She has also been really
slow in updating the pictures. Oh well, Mommy has a lot of things going on in her mind these days haha. But she has to say that this is the best milesstone she has experienced with Ethan, although she hears a lot about the "terrible twos". But this stage Ethan also brings adorable bouts of independence and creativity. She loves the random statements of affection that Ethan does. He will run into the room and give her a big hug and yell "Hi mommy,!" then take off again. She also loves the moments when Ethan says "thank you". He is really showing his true personality.
Ethan also had the haircut two weeks ago. The past few haircut experiences for him have been very painful and tearful. However
this time it was so much better since the helper asked Mommy to stand at the side and let him sitting on her lap. He was so calm through the whole haircut without any resistance.

Kitchen Sink Turned into the Water Play!
 |
|
Mommy just learned that another element of fun to Ethan's day by giving him a chance to play with the water at the kitchen sink. The only chance he usually gets to play with water is during bath time or watering the plan. The sink also gives him the cleaning skills, fun and hygiene. The pictures really say it all. And when you see them, hopefully laughter just comes pouring out of you!

What an accomplishment!

Ethan in the back yard (05/01/09)
|
|
Yes, it's true. Ethan turned 2 just 2 months ago, and he is officially potty trained!!! What an accomplishment! At the beginning, he wet his pants about 50% of the time, all over the floor..What a mess! Then gradually he wet his pants about 20% of the time. And for the past month, he didn’t wet his pants AT ALL and no accidents. It's amazing, isn't it! So it has been 7 weeks and he has not wet his pants once. Ethan could stay dry during his nap time, and he could even stay dry at night!!! He is definitely becoming aware of his bodily functions. Of course he is still wetting his diaper at night. Overall, Mommy can’t get over how well Ethan is doing with his potty training. Well, he is not training anymore, he is there! Mommy is so proud of her little boy!!! It was a breeze.

Easter Bunny Picture for the First Time.
 Easter Bunny with Ethan (04/04/09)
|
|
We happened to be in a mall on Mommy's regular-day-off Friday and saw a very sad Easter Bunny sitting on his little chair looking very lonely. So
Mommy took Ethan a bit closer to give him a wave. Surprisingly, Ethan smiled his big and excited grin. So Mommy thought that why not get a picture of Ethan sitting on the Easter Bunny's lap for the first time. Mommy
also realized that this Easter Bunny looks way much better that other creepy Easter Bunnies in other malls. Mommy guessed that Ethan enjoyed sitting on the Easter Bunny's lap. His smile in the picture
says it all.

Happy 2nd Birthday to Ethan!
 Happy 2nd Birthday to Ethan!
|
|
Wow, it’s been a while since Mommy’s last update. It’s been so long that every time she thought about posting, she thought, “Gee, it’s been so long, I don’t think I can catch up!” Well, here she is again, finally. So we had Ethan’s 2nd birthday party last weekend, and it was a ton of fun. Mommy is overwhelmed each day as she walks out the house and catches her eye on the calendar. Time is like a blink of an eye. Where has the time gone? Mommy and Daddy love every single minute we are around Ethan and just cannot spend enough time with him. He makes us laugh everyday. Looking at him, we both realize that he is now growing up, and that our baby is slipping into a young boy.

Happy Year of the Ox to everyone!
Happy Year of the Ox to everyone! |
|
The fever around Lunar New Year is on in certain ways for each of everyone. To some people, it is the festival of Purity and Renewal. To some people, especially for those who live in the United States,
it is like the combination of New Year’s Day, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. Just like every year, Mommy goes to the temple to worship, to thank the gracious protection from the god of heaven in the past year, and to pray for safe, smooth and luck for the coming year. So in the spirit of this special occasion, may the New Year bring you all the best, happiness, good health, great fortune and abundant blessings for the 2009 Year of the Ox.

10 Things Mommy Loves about Ethan

For some time, Mommy has always wanted to write things that she loves about her son, Ethan. His first year was like a roller-coaster ride (gasp). But as he grows, he becomes a little person
in the whole range of all magic milestones. Although he is now 22 months and will be 2 years old by March, he has a personality that demands to be editorialized.
Of course, she loves her son beyond any reason. But she still would like to write down her 10 things she loves about Ethan. So here is the list, and it is not all-inclusive and in no particular order.
- His bright, big, full-faced smile. Ethan has the cutest smile on earth. She would kill for his smile. It seems to be so perfect that it can take your breath away. Seeing his smile is divine. And It is contagious.
- Ethan is extremely photogenic. He is such a joy to photograph. He could win the America's Most Photogenic Babies.
- Ethan loves to sing and knows the words to several songs. (counting songs, rhyming songs, or nonsense songs)
- The way Ethan runs up to Mommy excitedly and says "Mamia!" (or "Baba!") as if you walk in the door. This is the equivalent of winning some lottery jackpot!
- The way Ethan is in love with his "lovey" (his pillow that is made by his Grandpa)
- The way Ethan laughes hysterically as he tries to catch up when Mommy plays chase with him.
- How much Ethan looks like his Daddy.
- The way Ethan thinks that he can scare you by making his funny little face with his lower lip puffed out.
- Mommy loves how cute Ethan is when she asks him for a kiss, and he opens his mouth so wide, you get the dribbliest kiss ever!
- How proud of himself he looks when he does something new and shares with you.

Enjoy A Relaxing Bubble Bath

Enjoy A Relaxing Bubble Bath
|
|
One of Ethan's favorite things to do is take a bath! And it has to be bubble bath. He loves to splash in the water and play with all the bath toys. Mommy is usually very occupied making sure he is safe, so she rarely gets a chance to capture the moment. Last weekend Mommy took these darling photos of her sweet boy in his bath. She thinks that Ethan's bath time might be one of her favorite things too.

First Trip to the Snow in Mountain High
First trip to the snow in Mountain High - 2008
|
|
Mommy forgot to mention that Ethan got a cold for few days before Christmas. This was also the first time he had bad cough. Poor Baby. So after his recovery, we decided to take him to see his first snow in Mountain High and have some fun with snow sliding. Driving almost two hours, we finally got there. It was a very sunny day but cold. We stayed there for about one hour, and he fell asleep afterwards. He was not so thrilled with the snow sliding but very excited to see the snow and enjoyed so much walking on it. Until today whenever he sees the snow appearing in the newspaper or on television, he says "Mommy! Snow! Snow!” Isn’t that cute?

Christmas 2008
Ethan with Christmas Tree - 2008
|
|
Mommy has been super busy recently and finally got around to updating the page. We hope that all of you celebrating Christmas and New Year and had a fantastic time. It was Ethan's second Christmas. He seemed to enjoy it more this year with the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and the snowman. We did not have the real tree, but instead we used the artificial one for safety reason. We told ourselves that we will get the real tree for Christmas 2009 so that we could enjoy the ambiance and aromas of a real tree. Ethan also enjoyed so much helping us to put decorations up around the tree. On Christmas day, we went to his grandma's house for family party. Ethan did not have a delighted response the whole present opening things. However, he had fun playing with his new toys and running around with all his cousins. So much fun in fact that Mommy didn't take very many pictures because she did not want to miss the fun by being behind the camera. Here's a few shots with the Christmas tree at home. Overall, we had an awesome holiday season. |

19 months
Ethan had his 18 months appointment on October 10. He is 28.5 lbs, and 34" tall. The doctor is very pleased with his growth. She said that Ethan’s growth is very proportional and is already the size of a two-year-old kid. Everything else looks great and he also got one shot of immunization this time.
It is really amazing to see how Ethan has grown. He will be 20 months by this Thanksgiving, but Mommy needs to report what he has been doing lately at this stage. Again, he is on the move CONSTANTLY. Life is now flying by. He has learned much everything by imitation and is so interested in doing things that he sees you do. One thing that Mommy sees is that Ethan craves audience and people around him. He enjoys so much if there is someone playing with him or keeping him occupied. He is blowing kisses and waving to EVERYONE and almost everything. Can you believe that he has these bursts of energy while running around the house and stops and claps and says “Yay” with his hands and claps and repeats the whole thing over and over.
Some of Mommy’s friends told her that now its time to prepare for a sibling. She is not sure if she is ready, but she will give it a thought. Overall, Ethan is very QUITE proud of everything his little body can do. And he is really and bundle of energy and Joy!

Our First Time Trick-or-Treating!
This is Ethan's second Halloween experience. It was a blast for him. He got a chance to go out trick-or treating with Mommy and Daddy. Last year he was in the incredible infant pumpkin costume.
This year he was dressed as a famous superhero costume. He is still in love with this costume although Halloween is over. Every day after bath time, he would go directly to the drawer and ask to wear this costume on him.
As in traditional way, people would go to houses for trick-or- treating. We went to the mall near home instead. The reason was that Ethan is still too young to go out to the streets for the real trick-or-treating.
However, we were very disappointed that most of the stores gave out the warped hard candy, Dum Dum lollipops, Smarties, and stickers. Of course, Mommy would not let Ethan taste all these candies. It's not because of eating candy would make teeth fall out. But those are not Halloween treat for kids. Eventually these candies will be thrown away if they sit in a bowl as a decoration for so long. Overall, it was a family experience for all of us. And the feeling to take Ethan around to show off his darling look was surely exciting.

Pumpkin Patch at Santa Fe Dam Regional Park
Pumpkin Patch at Santa Fe Dam Regional Park
|
|
Mommy did not even realize that there is a very beautiful lakeside park located in the middle of an industrial section (the junction of the freeway 210 and 605 in the City of Irwindale), Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area. Like every other pumpkin patch places, this year the park also has its own annual pumpkin patch festival that features a hayride, haunted house, boat rentals and some other sport activities. Fishing is also very popular here at the lake. However, the parking is a little expensive. We paid $8 for the entrance, but we had a great time and had so much fun on that day. If you happen to be around the area, you might want to give yourself some times to visit it. We are pretty sure that you would have a great time there.

Pumpkin Hungting Season at Cal Poly Pomona (10/18/08)
Pumpkin Hungting Season at Cal Poly Pomona (10/18/08)
|
|
It's that time of the year again, Pumpkin Hunting Season. Mommy could say that this might be the best Pumpkin Patch because it is a little more kid friendly, and pumpkins are only $4 each. This is also the second year Ethan has been to Cal Poly for his pumpkin. This year we went to the pumpkin patch, grabbed a pumpkin and took some pictures and headed home. Mommy felt like they had a low pumpkin production this year, and that maybe was the reason why they placed a lot of pumpkin vines around. But it was a very beautiful sunny day, and Daddy finally had a chance to check out this pumpkin patch. We promised ourselves that next year we will visit the Insect Fair and the Corn Maze area.

A Day at the Hurst Ranch Historial Museum
Harvest Festival at the Hurst Ranch Historial Museum
|
|
Living in West Covina is hard to find a rural ambience. We were very surprised to find out that there is the Hurst Ranch Historical Museum that evokes all the showcases in early 20th century ranching in the San Gabriel Valley. It is located right in the middle the residential area of West Covina. Moreover, it is also a very interactive place that features all equipments and activities from the past ranching eras. We came to visit the ranch on the occasion of the Harvest Pumpkin Festival. There were a lot young kids on that day. They all got a chance to take turn to experience life on a ranch. Ethan is still too small to interact with all those activities, but he surely had a great time picking his one-best-free pumpkin and checking out the animals at the petting zoo.

A Playdate at Long Beach Aquarium
|
It's been a long time since the last trip to San Diego with Uncle Lanh's family. We decided to get together again by visiting Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific on Sunday.
We were not impressed with this aquarium at all. It is nice but not a real huge place, so this is best for a half day trip for families with kids because it mostly filled with kids and babies. Parking and admission are bit pricey. There are not many attractions and very hard to follow. However, they have a great collection of creatures from the Pacific Ocean. Some were fish that we can see at one of those aquariums in a fancy Chinese restaurant. Some were fish that we can see in the Chinese Supermarket. The cool thing at this place is that visitors can touch smaller sharks and some other fish in the petting pools. The only thing that Mommy felt impressed was the jellyfish exhibit. But the most important of all was the playdate between Ethan and Katie.
This trip was the opportunity to expand their circle of friends, and hopefully they will enjoy this adventure way off in the future when reviewing these photos.

18 Months on the Planet Earth
|
| Ethan just turned 18 months few days ago and begins to control the world around him. This stage to him is like “I am on the move”. He is doing well in most of the development milestones. He learns thing by doing and watching people how they behave, not by being told. He uses around 25 recognizable words (all in Vietnamese :D) but understands many more than we realize. However, he talks to himself most of time to experiment with tones and rhythms, especially when playing with the telephone. In physical development, he is able to use the spoon to feed himself and also able to scribble with a crayon. The good thing is that he no longer explores things in his mouth but likes to take things apart. He is also becoming interest in household activates and enjoy mimicking cooking, sweepings or dusting. The amazing thing we enjoy seeing in his language development is that he obeys simple instruction such as "shut the door", "get a diaper", "go to the stair and sit down", " get your shoes". Another interesting one is that he knows where things are kept and go look for them. He is also able to recognize familiar faces and points at the pictures and says names accordingly such as mamia, baba, and popo (grandma). These are some of his new milestones f in 18 months. We know that there will be much more “something interesting” coming in the future and we will surely to continue to have more fun with our bundle of joy.

Visiting Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights - Week Ending Sept 14, 2008
|
|
Not much to report this weekend other than the fact that we visited Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights for the full moon occasion. For those who don’t know about this temple, it has a reputation as a standout among the many beautiful temples in Buddhist America, including its size and elaborateness. Ethan did seem to have a lot of fun running and exploring around the area. Enjoy the photos.

A Day to Beat the Heat at Wild Rivers Waterpark (Week Ending August 10, 2008)
|
|
Living in Los Angeles county we don't have a lot of access to many good water parks . However, Wild Rivers Waterpark in Irvine, which is about 40 miles from our home, is the one that gives us a lot of good reviews and suggestions. It is also a place to cool down on these hot summer days. The admission is a little expensive and don't expect anything else, such as food, to be cheap, so pack your food and look for the discount tickets before coming. This park has so many things available for small kids. Ethan did seem to enjoy the water and have so much fun with it.

16 Months on the Planet Earth
 Ethan with water hose
Like many people usually say that babies grow so fast and you won’t even realize it that they can do a lot of things.
Ethan is now 16 months and in the lovely stage where he touches, examines and at least tries to taste nearly everything that he finds around him. It is surprising to see that he can understand much more than he can speak. He still depends mostly on nonverbal communication, pointing and giving gesture to tell us what he wants or what he wants us to see. He has some individual words but most of which we can’t understand the actual words he is saying. But he can clearly say words like “bye bye”(as in goodbye and airplane in Vietnamese) “bubble” (as in bubble bath), “ball”, and "mammam" (as in eating). The amazing thing is that he has started using “mama” or “mimi” which makes Mommy very happy.
He can also distinguish Mommy from Daddy and other family members. Ethan also has gotten some new teeth. He’s up to 14 by now.
In addition to these amazing things above, Ethan is also comically obsessed with 3 things: going outside, shoes, and watering the plants and flowers. He absolutely loves the hose. Just about every time we go to the yard, he goes straight for the hose and whines until he can water a tree or plant. Lately he's been trying to drink water from the hose.

Happy July 4th Weekend
|
|
We hope all of you had a happy 4th of July and a great vacation time. This year has been a challenging year so far for both Mommy and Daddy. With that in mind, they planned to relax, ate some great food, enjoyed the hot sun, and returned to work rested and energized for the remaining year of 2008 :D
We took Ethan to Auntie Huong's house so that the kids can play together. And they did have a great time in the swimming pool.

A New Beautifully Crafted Rocking Horse
|
|
Daddy and Mommy were looking around for quite some times to buy a rocking horse for me. After reading and reviewing on the quality, they finally decided to purchase this Storkcraft Rocking Horse from Wal-Mart.
It was so easy to assemble, and it was also so pleasing to look at when put together. It is also very sturdy and could be passed down for generations to come :D. It really brought back Mommy's childhood when she had one.
The look in my eyes was just so priceless to Mommy when she saw me sitting on the horse.

15 Month Appointment
|
|
Ethan had his 15 month appointment on the 23rd of June, and he weighed 28 lbs and 5 oz (12.84 kg) and is now 33.5 inches tall (85.1 cm). He looks great and had one shot but was very grumpy afterwards. His first molars are about to come in, and probably that could be the reason why he is acting so cranky these days, importantly if anyone takes him away from something (especially Mommy).
He is at a stage that he needs to be watched a bit more as he is getting into things or trying to turn on the stove and some other wonderful and amazing things that 15 month olds usually do. Please enjoy the photos of my most adorable moments.

|
Week Ending June 8, 2008
Ethan's sense of humor begins to blossom. He continues to enjoy making faces and taking part in peek-a-boo or hiding behind doors or his hands. And now he loves being "chased" by Mommy when she is on her hands and knees. And more especially, he has also started to copy Mommy and Daddy more and more. He would copy Daddy when he sees Daddy combing his hair or brushing teeth. Mommy has also noticed Ethan having a ton of fun playing with his toys more recently. And most importantly, he has figured out how to use one item to stand on to reach things that were used to be out of his reach.
Having watching Ethan grow and develop more sense of humor bring laugher and joy to the family members.

Week Ending May 25, 2008
 |
|
Nothing much excited to report this week ending beside the fact that it was a long weekend. We did not do anything much. We just relaxed and spent quality time together at home. However, on Monday we went to Great Auntie Jane's house for the family-get-together BBQ lunch. It was nice to see everybody in the family that we have not seen for awhile.

14 months and First Haircut
Ethan now is 14 months and 6 days old. He is very much the center of his own universe. He also has his own way to express his feelings which some times make Mommy and Daddy confused. He has also learned two new sign languages. He could sign "more" if he wants to eat more of his favorite food. And he could sign for "juice" or "water".
Mommy had five day weekend so she took Ethan to the first haircut on Friday, May 24, 2008. It sounds interesting when the hairdresser said that this first haircut will mark the time when boys would begin to look differnt from girls. Overall he did really well and it was amazing to witness that he had his head held still from the start to end. Mommy feels that it came out pretty cute!

I am invincible
 |
|
I am officially walking which also means that this is the end of my infancy, no longer a baby. It started last Thursday (05/09/08) when I consistently started walking 5 feet. Again it is really amazing to see my tiny little self walking. It is like I am walking with the feeling of victory and with the power that walking gives me. Since I have just achieved this new independence, I am having fun every day practicing this new skill over and over again. |

Soon those days will come!!!
 |
|
It is a challenge for both Mommy and Daddy to connect with me when I made my appearance in the family. But my Mommy has some natural advantages in the bonding process while Daddy is still working on it. Beleive it or not, Daddy has made a lot of progress since then to make quality bonding time with me. Daddy keeps saying that he can't wait to get me into the swimming lessons or just to take me to the park to play tennis. Dont't worry Daddy! Soon those days will come. |

Week Ending April 27, 2008
|
|
I have started vocalizing more all of a sudden. I also started this week and last couple of weeks to cry when Mommy leaves the room. I am also learning to make my needs known in other ways by pointing to the object that I would like to hand to me. It is really amazing to see how I am able to point to a body part such as head, teeth, and stomach when asked.
Another milestone is that I can stand really well now without holding on anything. Enjoy another of my sweetness series of photo playing in my little backyard. |
|
|
Week Ending April 20, 2008
 |
|
I am not officially walking yet. But I was quite confidently doing 15-20 steps at a time on Thursday night. Mommy feels that it is so amazing to see my tiny little self walking. But since then I did not like to walk anymore. Hopefully I will walk more again in the next few weeks. Mommy took me to the Chinese Temple in Rosemead for the Full Moon festival. For the first time, I followed Mommy to make my bow to the Buddha statue and smiled.

Beginning of First Steps
 |
I took my first first unsteady steps on Monday April 7th, at 7 pm!!!!!! I was standing in the kitchen and took five steps in a row towards Mommy, then fell on my behind. After that, Mommy also witnessed me standing, not holding onto anything. Unfortunately, Daddy was not at home to see it, but Mommy quickly called him to let him know. Hopefully I will do it again some other times this week for Daddy to see. But Mommy knows that I may not walk for a bit still or I may be running by the end of this month.
I am also eating more table food. I definitely prefer small bits of real food to baby food. And I always seem to want a taste of any food that Mommy and Daddy are eating.

1 year appointment
 |
I had my 1 year doctor appointment on Tuesday, April 1st. I was 26lbs (12kg) and 31 ¼ inches tall (80cm) I look great and everything is normal other than the fact that I am a big boy. I also got four shots of immunization this time. Mommy now is gradually switching from formula to milk by adding some milk mixing with formula. Hopefully I will be able to adapt well with this change and get used to the taste because the goal is to just have milk and no formula at all.
I am babbling some new words recently such as “ba ui” “nhan nhan”. I also have started using “ma ma” which makes Mommy very happy although I say it occasionally. I am also exhibiting a lot of knowledge of language. For example is that Mommy asked me to give her something from my toy box and I did it! I now have 7 teeth! Yes, three more teeth came in last week, both on the top and 1 on the bottom. For those who want to keep the score, I’ve got four on top and three on the bottom.

1st Birthday
|
|
Mommy can’t believe that I am 1 and she also can’t believe that she has a son. Anyway, my first birthday party was amazing. It was also a celebration of my milestone from the baby to toddler, which also means that I am no longer a small baby that longed to be held in Mommy’s arms for an indeterminate amount of time, but I am now on the move. The party was also an opportunity to host a gathering with friends and relatives of all ages which Mommy and Daddy have not seen for a while. Daddy had a lot of fun with his friends. Although I was completely unaware of my accomplishment, hopefully I will enjoy it way off in the future while reviewing these photo albums. Thank you for all coming and thanks for all your wonderful gifts. And please enjoy the photos. |

First Year of Life (Week Ending of March 16, 2008)
 |
The first year of Ethan's life is just one of the many milestones that both Mommy and Daddy are blessed with. It is also a life changing experience for both of them since the day they brought Ethan home from the hospital after Mommy survived 9 months of pregnancy and made it through the excitement of labor and delivery. Believe it or not, Ethan is turning one year old this coming Friday (03/21/08). Mommy is so grateful to have all the helps, supports, and encouraging words from friends and family members. Mommy would like to send a very special thanks to Grandma who has diligently spent her time to watch over Ethan while Mommy and Daddy are at work. Mommy has also learned that mothering a child has taught her a lot and it is not an easy job to do. She is kind of a very different person now from the one that she was before she had baby, and most of these changes and differences are for the better, if not all.
Both Mommy and Daddy have had a lot of fun along the way in our life with little Ethan, including all the laughing and crying which are the most precious moments of the baby first year of life and joy that they will never forget.

First time on vacation (Week Ending of March 9, 2008)
Our first family vacation was fun but very exhausting. Daddy's friend, uncle Steve, got a very good deal package for all of us to visit the three parks: SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park in San Diego. Mommy was a little worried about arriving in the morning after it opened at SeaWorld for the first day. The weather other than the wind was great and the crowds were not too large. We did not make the most out of the Sea World because Ethan spent most of his time sleeping in his stroller. The only show we watched was the Pet’s Rule Show. This was the third time to visit Seaworld for Mommy and Daddy, and again what an awesome experience. Ethan could not focus on all the activities in Pet’s Rule Show, but Mommy and Daddy were still amazed what they can train dogs, cats, pigs, etc. to do.
|
The next day we went to the "world famous” San Diego Zoo. Mommy and Daddy have never been to this zoo but we both absolutely loved it. The park is a very large place to walk around, but we realized that we could walk the whole zoo in a day because it was such a lovely day. And we finally did lots of walking to get around. We would absolutely recommend it. You could spend an entire day here, open to close, and it still wouldn't be enough because everything is outside. However, we were very exhausted with Ethan because accessing through the park is all sidewalks adjoining bus roads and the crowds. The animals were quite active on that day so we got chances to see lots of them. We missed seeing Panda bears because of the long line waiting and we did not want to wait in line under the heat. We also did not get a chance to see polar bear playing in the water. Other than these two disappointments, it was a very enjoyable day. |
The last day we went to Wild Animal Park. This was the second visit for Mommy and Daddy. The park is beautifully landscaped and located in a very nice area. It has a wide range of animals to view, unlike the San Diego zoo, the animals seem to enjoy the environment that more closely resembles their natural habitat. We all got so tired this last trip, so we did not want to walk around the park anymore. We took the "Journey to Africa" tour immediately after arriving. Ethan seemed to enjoy sitting and standing on the tram so much. It was probably because it is an open air trams ride so when the wind blows on his face, he laughs and giggles during the whole tour. The tour guide provides lots of fascinating information. However we did not see a lot of animals as we expected this time in comparision of five years ago. It was probably because of the heat in the day, all animals were resting. Another tip when on this tour is to try to get the seats on the driver’s side since most of the animals are on the left. We also watched the Elephant show but it was very boring. There were only two elephants in the show: one old elephant and a baby one which does not look like a baby elephant at all. Other than the "Journey to Africa" tour, it was the least enjoyable trip out of the three places we visited. |

Shopping for new Toys (February 29, 2008)
On Mommy’s off-Friday this week, she decided to take me to the mall to shop for some new toys. From my birth to when I turn one year old is the time when the most amazing changes take place. And Mommy thinks that I need a lot of baby toys at this stage for learning. With so many choices, picking the right toy for me is not easy and can be an overwhelming for the new parents.
After endlessly roaming the aisles looking, Mommy finally decided to buy the musical trumpet, the Pull and Spin Caterpillar, and the Ball Mania Play Arena.

The Eleventh month on Planet Earth (February 21, 2008)
Today is the eleventh month that Ethan came to the Planet Earth. Mommy continues to be amazed by progress little Ethan has made since her birth. This morning he has a cold and a slight fever, but happy to say that he is still playing actively. He tried baked sweet potatoes and butter squash coated with olive oil and cinnamon. And it turned out that he enjoyed it so much and kept asking for more. He also had a ton of fun playing with his new toys lately. He has figured out how to press the button on his car toy and how to push the car back and forth, which he had no idea previously what to do with these toys. We also realized that he started to “bond” with his talking puppy.
He is also now a pro at "interesting" crawling. He can sneek accross the rooms without making a sound. He is able to stand up by himself and leaning against everything. He can call out to everbody around him if they dont pay attention to him even if they're all in the same room.

9 Month Visit at the Doctor
 |
|
Ethan had his 9 month visit at the doctor on February 5, 2008 and was 25 lbs and 31” tall. The doctor said that he is growing proportionally on his growth chart, which is good to hear. He is still practicing to stand up from a sitting position with holding on the crib or chairs. He is also learning "baby sign" language for "milk", "phone" and "eat". When the phone rings he puts the toy phone or his hand next to his ears and makes noises like he is talking.
It is really cute seeing that. Mommy has been adding egg yoke mixed with chopped spinach to his diet, and he loves it. His 2 top front teeth (lateral incisor) already came out. So he now has four teeth total.

A Trip to Phap Van Temple
 |
|
In the spirit of praying for a good new year, we went to the Phap Van temple in the weekend (Sunday February 10, 2008). It was not as crowded as we expected for the first week of the Lunar New Year. Mommy and Daddy have not visited this temple for such a long time. It's been changed, not only in the main hall but also around the surrounding scenery.
I was so thrilled with looking at all the different types of Buddha images and stautues. Both Mommy & Daddy got a good laugh when I pointed to the Budha statues and said "ba ba" almost endlessly.

Happy Lunar New Year, Year of the Rat (Week Ending February 10, 2008)
 |
Time has passed by like a blink of an eye. It's time to celeberate the Lunar New Year. This year is the Year of the Rat which is also the first in the cycle of 12 animal signs. Some people beleive that it is also a good year and good time of renewal in so many ways, a frest start.
May your Year of the Rat spakles with joy, good luck, and good fortune. And may you be blessed with peace and safety in all four seasons.

Happy Birthday to Grandpa (Week Ending February 3, 2008)
|
Some people say that my Grandpa looks very young in his age. But he did just turn 62. We had a nice dinner and
his favorite cake for him. For dinner, we had quickly wok-fired lobster, shaken beef cubes, clams fried with basil sauce,
and an impressive whole steamed fish, which we ordered from his all-time favorite and amazingly fresh and delicious Newport Seafood Restaurant in Rowland Heights.
Happy Birthday, Grandpa!!! We all love you!!! |

Schooching Milestone

Each of my new milestone is thrilling to everybody at home. These moments are not just exciting and fun, but they are also the markers to my growth and development. On Friday Jan 25, 2008 for the first time while sitting with all my toys, I was able to schooch on my butt. It was a delightful thing to watch. And it is going to be my favorite way to get around.

The Tenth month on Planet Earth (January 21, 2008)
 |
| |
|
Today is the tenth month that Ethan came to the Planet Earth. His personality multiplied times 100 from just a few weeks ago. It has been so amazing to see all the changes in him. He laughs at things that you can never imagine that would make him laugh. For example, he laughs at the sound when you try to squeeze and empty last few drops of the bottle of lotion. He also does cute and funny faces to make you laugh even harder. Mommy loves to see all these new things in him and she wishes that he could slow things down just a bit so that Mommy can enjoy a little longer. He is still practicing standing and pushing himself to stand up.
This picture was taken at The People Picture on the day he turned 10 months. That was also the first time he could stand holding on to the chair for few seconds without falling to a sitting position.

My First Christmas Story
I hope all of you celebrating Christmas and had a merry one! Mine wasn't so great. It happened on the 21st of December which I turned exactly 9 months and also the first time I got really sick. Mommy and Daddy did not know how I got started. But I started with a slight cold then a sudden high fever between 102° and 104° Fahrenheit. It lasted for 3 days and ended abruptly. It broke the entire family members’ hearts by seeing my glassy eyes and pitiful fever. Everybody in the family tried to calm me by holding and rocking me and letting me sleep on their shoulders with the hope that it can soothe the discomfort of the fever. Mommy thought that I should be okay after my temperature returned to normal; however after the fever was gone, I developed a rash covering almost the whole body. Mommy was worried and took me to the urgent care facility to find out what exactly it was and make sure that it was not dangerous. The doctor diagnosed and said there is no specific treatment for this rash and just let it runs its course. And the doctor was right that my rash eventually disappeared after 2 days.
That was my first Christmas story and also the first time I got really sick, but we all enjoyed the time being together with everybody in the family for the holidays.

Two Days Before Christmas
What Christmas means to each of us? To Mommy, Christmas to her is a celebration, which includes spending time with family, decorating the house, shopping, and a long vacation, which she gets to stay home for 12 days.
Today is December 23 which is just two days before Christmas. Everyone seems to be preparing itself for this day of festivity. And just like the other years which Mommy and Daddy usually get a long vacation to just relax and enjoy the holidays. We went to Victoria Garden Shopping Mall. It’s been a while since Mommy and Daddy last came for its opening. And now it is quite a popular shopping center. It has more variety of clothing stores which we could not find in our local area. Mommy and Daddy are not usually shoppers, but during the Christmas season, they actually enjoy shopping. All the stores are so beautifully decorated and very festive which also can easily get them spending money. Overall, the trip was so much fun and we had a great time.

It's starting to feel like Christmas around here!
Christmas is quickly approaching, only two weeks away. It is a happy time not only for kids but also for grown ups. People are busy shopping and buying gifts which can be a very stressful task emotionally and financially. Some times people often struggle to think of an idea for someone because they want to ensure that people who receive a gift that they like. Mommy and Daddy took me to the Mall this weekend. We bought some items for uncle Men to bring to Vietnam as gifts for relatives. Surprisingly the mall was not as crowded as expected for this holiday shopping. We went to visit our Grandma afterwards.
So what ever you do for this holiday season, try to have fun .

Winterfest Event

Daddy, Mommy and I went to the Winterfest Event this weekend. It was a very nice day with a few stiff winds blowing. Nothing remarkable but it was a fine relaxing day for all of us. This event was held by the City of West Covina Community Services Department, in where we also live.
The event includes some arts and crafts, food booths, photo with Santa and Ms. Claus (not free), and especially with tons of snow for kids to play.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Halloween pumpkins are all gone. Leaves have all fallen to the ground. And the air has truly turned windy and cold.
Thanksgiving is here. And it is also a time for celebration and giving thanks to all our friends and family members that have touched our hearts. And yet, many people don't give thanks for all the blessings that they have in their lives on a daily basis. But if we just look carefully enough, again on a daily basis, we WILL find that we have blessed.
To celebrate my first Thanksgiving 2007, here are "some" of the blessings in my life. I have been blessed with the gift of life. I have been blessed by the loving care of my parents. I have also been VERY thankful by the thorough care of my Grandma. Well, these are just some of things that I am thankful for. I am sure that there will more in the future.
So my friends, let's give thanks to all that we are so grateful for.
May you and your family have a beautiful Thanksgiving! And Happy Turkey Day!

Having "the off days” ...
It is so often easy to miss the sign of baby's teething. Everybody in the home really does not know what to look for or expect. They say that at around six or seven months the baby's primary teeth should start to appear, but during last week there was no signs of any teeth at all.
All of a sudden, a cute little seven-month-old Ethan is not sleeping as well as he used to anymore. He unexpectedly turned into a cranky, fussy drooling, chew-on-everything little boy. He needs to be held and bounced all day long. Mommy thinks that is partially because he is teething. One night while Mommy and him were playing, she noticed that there was a little whitish spot shown on the bottom gum. She felt it and she can see that one of his bottom teeth already started to come in. She was so excited although it was an awful week.
(Well you can't really see whitish spot from this picture. It is still too small. Please check back in few weeks :D )

Holiday season is coming
Fall is coming. It is also the most stressful time of the year, holiday season. For some people it could be very stressful simply because they have to scour the stores searching for the perfect gifts for their loved ones. For some of us we might say that it is easier to buy presents than just to plain say it. We know that it is temporary but we are still so preoccupied with it. Do we really believe a brand new car can change our lives?
Holiday season is coming. Let's try to give a holiday that lasts more than just ONE day...Perhaps a memorable dinner with love ones? That way could make our holiday season more meaningful.

Daddy's First Pumpkin Carving Experience
Daddy has never carved a pumpkin before and wanted to have a shot at it. So on Saturday (Oct 27th) he decided to give it a try which amazingly turned out pretty good. He did not use all the sophisticated, high-precision instruments to carve, but all he needed was a three inch dull kitchen knife. Daddy created a triangle-eyed, triangle-nosed and square-toothed masterpiece of horror. It took him only half an hour from the start fo finish.
Kudos to Daddy for great work. Happy Halloween all and I hope that yours will be a full of frightful fun one !!!

My First Pumpkin Festival

As fall approaches, so does Halloween. Each year, parents usually prepare for Halloween by purchasing Halloween costumes for their children, reviewing Halloween safety tips, and much more. Mommy feels that I am too young to consume candy. And Halloween does not have to just be associated with candy and other treats. It could be a memorable experience on its own as long as great memories are created.
This year the annual harvest Pumpkin Festival at Cal Poly Pomona was held on Oct 20. It was also the first time experience for Mommy, Grandpa, Grandma and Uncle Men. Unfortunately Daddy could not go with us. He was busy working on his deadline projects. Daddy owed us another trip. With free admission, we can pick our own pumpkins at $4 (the large one) straight out of the patch. We also enjoyed activities such as petting zoo, games, and entertainment. During the festival, the Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch also offered a variety of vendor booths and contests including a scarecrow contest and a pumpkin-themed cooking contest. They also had a variety of pumpkins, other gourds and squash for sale.
Overall this Pumpkin Festival was a wonderful event. We all had a great time. And we will certainly come back next year.

My Food
Why Mommy decides to make homemade baby food instead of store-bought ones? She feels that the homemade baby food will give her total control over what is put into the food. Trader Joe's has become her favorite market to shop for my food. There are also some extra benefits: saving money (not only the cost but also the nutrients), and putting the love and care into the food and ensuring that ONLY high quality foods are selected. There are a lot of fun and excitement in making the baby food although it is a lot of work. But the food is really tasty and healthy.
Here is my food list:
My Yummy Fruits (all steam/boil until tender)
- Apples
- Avocado (yes, avocado is a fruit!)
- Banana Apple Sauce Mush
- Mango
- Pears
My Vegetables:
- Fingerling Potato
- Sweet Potato
- Peas
- Green Beans

Six-Month Checkup
Mommy still can't believe it has been six months already since I was born. Mommy won't reminisce but when she thinks about it, everything is still so clear to her. She hopes that she has that kind of recollection when I turn 20. And she has been been a mom for half a year. Mommy and I both learned so much about this new world I am living in. Of course there will always be more to discover. It is really an amazing progress that we have both made so far. In this checkup (Oct 3rd), I am 22.5 pounds, 29 inches long. I got 3 shots and a list of instructions:
- Let's start using a sippy cup with water in it for practice
- Start on fruits
- Keep away from stage 2 foods that have meat, dairy, strawberry or raspberry or honey in them
- And of course continue to eat vegetable:green beans and peas

Six-Month Celebration!!!
WOW!!! Six months. Half a year!!! How far I have come! In this last month, it seems like I have made especially huge strides. Mommy feels like I am not infant any more, but a true baby: eating solid food, sleeping swaddle-free, manipulating the various toys, sitting up and leaning forward on hands for 30 seconds before toppling over, laughing and babbling and smiling. And I begin to show a true personality.
Everybody in the family loves watching me grow and can't wait for me to be able to interact even more. Some times Mommy wants me to stay little forever. ;)) Every day Mommy always asks..."hmm now what is next with me?" She is trying hard to stay in the moment of enjoy, mindfulness, and happiness every time I show her something new. Having me has made Mommy encounter more and reinforce even more on the concept of "easier-said-than-done". Mommy is incredibly grateful for everything.

My Hair!!!
Chinese tradition says that shaving baby's head leads to fuller hair for the baby later in life. This is also considered a very common ritual. The thought is that because the hair of newborn baby is not clean although the baby is bathed and all. So after the baby turns one month or so the hair is shaved off so that new growth appears on the baby's head and a clean one too.
Mommy was so hesitate to shave my head because she was afraid that I might get hurt. So she waited and waited and finally the “day” arrived. It was not that bad for me. In fact some uncles and aunts said that I look even cuter.
|
|
Week Ending Sept 16, 2007
It has been a while since the last entry that Mommy updated. There are now so much more updates about me. Every time when Mommy and Daddy come home, it seems like I have learned some thing new each day. I grabbed Daddy's bowl and knocked his fork to the floor. I am getting stronger and more mobile. I can sit for very short periods of time without any support. And I have no sign of any teeth yet. I am able to say ma-ma-ma-ma or da-da-da-da or ba-ba-ba. It's pretty darn cute! And guess what!! I just turned six months.
|
|
Week Ending Sept 2, 2007
This weekend was the longest heat wave that everybody had to suffer.
The triple digits of temperatures remained throughout this weekend in so many areas. Home is the perfect place to stay away from this heat and of course with the air-conditioning on. However, Mommy wanted to take me out to expose to outside surrounding instead of staying home. So we escaped to the mall, where nearly hundreds of people also went. What an unusual holiday weekend crowd!
Beside the weather, these are my milestone for this week. I have been reaching for food a lot since last week and this week. And if you eat with me on your lap, you have to contend with me trying to steal your food. So Mommy started with rice cereal for the past two weeks to see how I would taste and feel it. So far I've had only one time in a day AND I have been so thrilled with it. I am also starting to respond to my name as well. It seems like my favorite toy now is my toes.
|
|
Week Ending August 26, 2007
I finally did it for the first time!!! On Saturday evening, August 25, I was on my playmat gym and decided that I needed to change the view because it was boring. So I decided to roll over from my back to my tummy. I then got REALLY mad and rolled from my tummy to my back!!!!
|
|
Week Ending August 19, 2007 (5 months)
I am starting to roll over and has officially outgrown the car seat and the bouncer. Daddy and Mommy feel that its time to change to different car seat. I also lean head forward to grab toes when lying on back. And of course I have been making undeniable laughter always.
|
|
Week Ending of August 5, 2007
I had my four month pediatrician appointment on August 3rd and I weighed in at 19 lbs 4 ounces and was 28” and also got my second round of immunizations.
Mommy and Daddy feel that this phase is one of the more enjoyable and easier to manage times in the first year of a baby’s life. Being with me at this age is more fun because of my response: laughing, smiling, and crying. I am always delightful when being held, bounced, cuddled, sat up, and played with. I am also beginning to show interest with food by drooling so much when I see someone is eating. I now turn my head in all directions when sitting and lying down. I will cry when I am alone and my cries are more steady and strong. I am also easily distracted and some times feedings can become very frustrating as I stop to respond to an outside noise.
|
|
Week Ending July 29, 2007
By this time, I am able to do a mini-pushup by holding up my head and chest and supporting myselft on my elbows while I am on my stomach.
|
|
Week Ending July 15, 2007
I m starting to sit with the support of my hands or a pillow. And I am becoming more aware of my surrounding and connecting the sight of things with so much pleasure.
My cries are now more deliberate. I cry between sobs to see if Mommy is coming to the rescue.
|
|
Week Ending July 8, 2007
At this phase Mommy and Daddy can get their hopes up because I really have a very excellent sleeping pattern. I sleep from 8:30 pm (or some times 9:00 pm) to 5:30 am without any occasional feedings in the middle of the night. And I usually take 2 daytime naps.
The fun part is that I am looking at everything with curiosity even with my own reflection in the mirror. I love to stare at my reflection and respond by a big grin when my mom holds me or sit me in front on the mirror. I am also trying to master my grabbing skills. Mommy thinks that I will be a righty because I have favor to grab things on my right hand most of the time. Mommy also feels so delightful to see me stop sucking my thumb or bottle just to listen to her voice. I am now becoming more engaging with people and everything around the house. And the fun has really begun as I have been making undeniable laughter. Daddy got the first laugh unexpectedly.
|
|
Week Ending July 22, 2007 (4 months)
Mommy feels that it is amazing to see how fast I have changed. I now smile at everybody to just get them to pay attention to me. I am able to hold my head all the way up and rest on my arms, and make swimming movements with both arms and legs when I am on my stomach. I say oo,ahh and other vowel sounds.
Sometimes when I say these sounds, I will say them quickly. Other times, I will say them slowly and kind of sing the sound. I also seem to be interested in looking at any new books, toys, or pictures.
I have very good control eye motion when Mommy reads books for me or when I play with my toys. My crying are decreasing as I express feelings with new sounds and gestures. And I espcially love to play with everybody in the house and with my favorite toys .
|
|
3 Months
I had my two month pediatrician appointment on May 21st and I weighed in at 15 lbs and was 25” and also got my first round of immunizations. Can you believe it?
It has been so great that my newborn days are long gone. And now I am in the month three. I begin to blossom into a person with a mind of my own. I am getting better control of my hands by bringing my hands together. I also like playing with my hands a lot as if they were toys. My little hands grab almost everything and pull it to my mouth, especially my clothes. My kicks are getting stronger and stronger. It is really amazing that I “talk” and laugh a lot more and smile spontaneously. My mom thinks that I would smile at all strangers, especially if they just look at me straight in the eye and talk to me. Also, I cry less and start expressing some new emotions. The great thing is that I start to sleep through the nights for 7 hours straight. My Mom and Dad are very grateful for the nice long block of sleep.
This is a fun time for my Mom and Dad.

|
Turning over a new leaf – 2 months
My first challenging month is over. And I am now in the month two.
I start to drool so much, and because of that my Mom makes me wear bib all the time so that it can catch all the drool. I am also putting everything into my mouth and producing so much saliva than I can even swallow. Some times my mom thinks that she probably did not finish eating all the food that she craved during pregnancy; and that caused why I am drooling a lot now. I am also increasing mobility by lifting my legs up naturally during diaper changes, which bring laughs to her every time she sees that. Furthermore, I also begin to sleep for longer chunks of time. At first Mommy was so worried because I did not wake up in the middle of the night to eat. But later she realized that I begin to have a sleeping pattern in which I sleep through the night for five or six hours.
My Mom thinks that I am a morning lark (my bedtime is often around 8:30 PM and I wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning), not like her – a night owl. And probably I will stay that way throughout my childhood.

Ethan @ Party - Celebration of Full Month - 30 days old
Believe or not!!!! I am 30 days old, counting from March 21 to April 21, 2007. My Mom and Dad decided to hold a joyous celebration of a “full month” party for me (Chinese says mahn yueh). According to traditional beliefs, the mother and the child are extremely vulnerable during the first month after the birth because it is considered an intense healing time for a new mother. Therefore my mom and I must remain inside the house during that time so that my mom could regain her strength. My mom thinks that it was the best time for her since she was freed from household duties and sat in her bed just to look after me.
My mom is very happy about this full month celebration. The reason is because she feels that she is back into regular life after all the traditional restrictions in that one month such as eating ONLY warming foods, avoiding showering, or getting chilled in any way.
Time flies so fast huh? Eh, do not say that I am old okay? Just remember that I am 30 days old only, not 30 years old. I was really happy that you all came to my celebration. I could tell that you had so much fun on that day:laughing, talking, and eating so much food. I've met and talked to some aunts. There were few uncles came early that morning to see me. Others were busy having beer and wine with my dad. And I was sleeping the whole time that afternoon so I did not get chances to meet all. I was kind of missed. But I understand that as long as you and my dad have fun, I am very happy. Let me copy my dad's favorite sentence, which is "your smile is my smile". If you're happy, I'm happy.
Let’s view some pictures that my dad and uncle Andy took on that day. Let’s begin…
Ah, wait… Let me say few words before viewing the pictures, “thank you for your coming and I will see you in the next party.”

My First Smiles
My first month at home made a huge adjustment for everyone. My mom feels like it was an endless cylce of feeding, diapering and soothing. But now it has been almost two months, and I am settling into a routine. I have started making sounds like "uh ..ah..oa..". My stretching and kicking are getting more vigorous. My dad asks my mom why I keep kicking and "dancing" all the time. I have also started to respond to voices and other sounds. My mom thinks that I have also learned to focus when someone talks to me. I also have started to smile on purpose, blow bubbles and coo when someones talks to me. My first smile to her is unforgettable. When I smiles at her, she melts. Just a few weeks after birth, and now I begin to offer surprisingly smiles. It truly is a joyous feeling for everyone at home.

Ethan @ Home - 5 days young
Hi again. It is me again. What do you think of my first day at the hospital? Do you think I look cute and handsome? ;)) Eh, if you say I am a handsome boy, that would be very sweet of you and of course I would be happy to hear that. And I think it's because I am inherited from my Mom. If you say I am not, I do accept that. However I will tell my Dad because of his gene. Ah, just want to share with you that my Dad is a very easygoing person. He would feels okay and would not face down if you said so.
The following pictures were taken at home. My dad took them. If you see the pictures blurry, it is my Dad's fault. Yes, everything is his fault. Even I came out to this new world, it was still my dad's fault ;))). Because of his "fault", you have a person to talk to now, agree?
My Dad didn’t take the pictures of my room, but I can tell you that it is very nice. And I like it very much. Thanks Mommy for spending her time to decorate it. She did all decorations.
I am sleeping in my lovely crib when Daddy took these pictures of me. My big eyes open while I am trying to say “hi” to you. Do you feel it? You can view my short 20 seconds video clips at www dot hiennhi dot com/movies/ethan/part1.zip Again, please remove spaces and replace dot with actual “.” I have another part2 as well.
Thank you so much for visiting my pages. Hopefully you will come back for more updates.

About Me
Hi Everyone!!! Welcome to my pages! First of all, I would like to say thank you for stopping by. And secondly, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Ethan Hang Cao. The name of Ethan is from the Hebrew, meaning "firmness, impetuous, strong, enduring, and constancy". Thanks Mom and Dad for choosing this name for me. I love it.
I was born on March 21, 2007. And it was also the first day of the Spring which is a divine symbol and promise of new life. According to the astrological sign, I am an Aries. My mom said ARIENS Children are bright, dynamic, hard working,
most comfortable working as a one man show, and love to be the first to discover and present things to the world. They are intuitive and articulate, with the capacity to inspire others.
I am being told that I was born in a very good year because it is not just the year of an ordinary Pig. It is the year of Golden Pig. According to Chinese Folklore, this is an event that occurs once in every 60 years and will ensure that a baby born on this year will experience a prosperous and wealthy life.
People said that I will be a free man since the pig only eats and sleeps. I can see that. I sleep all time. That’s so true. Instead of coming out to this new world on March 16, I arrived on March 21. Perhaps my mom's tummy was so cozy that I decided to stay inside for a few extra days. And I ended up four days over term. But it was perfectly fine.

Ethan @ Hopital - First Day of Life outside the Womb
I was born at Citrus Valley Medical Center- Queen of Valley Campus (Cathelic Healthcare Facility), West Covina, at 4:04 PM. I weighed in 8 pounds and was 19 3/4 inches of length. I've realized that I was really well taken care of when I was born. There were totally five nurses and a wonderful doctor took care of me. In fact they did a really great job. Saying was not enough; but crying was to show them my appreciation. And yes, they understood.
The new world to me is amazing. Wow, this has been a big day! People have treated me so well. My dad and my mom said that many uncles and aunts called, messaged, and gave me a lot of presents and toys. So let me say ... “Your calls, your caring words, your visits, and your gifts are truly and much appreciated. Thank you, thank you.”
Oh, I am talking but you haven’t seen me yet. How about looking at my pictures? One thing before viewing them is that it is absolutely essential for anyone who is 8 years old or older to view because I have few pictures naked ;)). If you are under age, I strongly suggest having someone who is eight years old or older. Any comments, please feel free to contact me at ecao @ hiennhi dot com. My Dad created this email for me. My Dad said that you need to remove spaces and also replace the dot to actual “.” before sending me an email. The purpose is to prevent the spam emails automatically.
Once again, thank you so much for visiting my pages.

Birth Story
When Mommy became pregnant, she thought that pregnancy will be just like everything else in her life which would run right on scheduled. She was wrong. I was due on March 16. On March 20th Mommy had to deal with questions like. “You’re still PREGNANT!!!” And yes Mommy was pregnant longer. She was five days over term although everything seemed to be fine, not even one pain. Her doctor did the internal exam and found her to be 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced. The doctor said that Mommy would go into labor anytime now. So the doctor told her to go to the hospital for induction on the 21st.
That morning finally came. It was a very cozy day. She had not eaten much that morning. She only had a small bowl of cereal and a small glass of milk. Daddy took Mommy to the hospital. It took only ten minutes to get there. So there Mommy sat in the hospital bed while they tested her. She was in a very nice birthing room. The nurses came in to “get her ready” at 7:30. They started the pitocin around 8 o’clock to speed up her labor. Mommy does not like drugs at all if they are not necessary. She thinks that her body knows what to do. However, in her case she had no choice.
The contractions started at about 10:00. She was in control. She had taken birthing class and was well educated. She was only having light contractions that did not hurt, just tightening. At that time she felt that she had to pee. Right after she peed, the contractions started harder and her water broke immediately. She thought that it must have been the moving around and the emptying her bladder. At about 12:30 the nurse checked on her. She was dilated at 7cm and her contractions were about 40 seconds apart. At around 2:00 the contractions were so bad, intense and close together that she did not want to talk at all. She ONLY concentrated on the breathing. At that time Daddy was trying to be the perfect coach. He massaged Mommy's back, but Mommy still felt the pain and did not think that she could do it anymore. She hurt!!!
Being in bed with the pain was so MISERABLE, but she was not going to take any pain medication of any kind. She thought that my Grandmother did it and she could too. However the nurse and the doctor forgot to tell her that pitocin drip caused a much harder labor. In addition, Mommy had back labor pain (my head was pressing toward Mommy’s spine) which could cause more trouble than the head facing down position.
The doctor came and checked on Mommy. He told her that she did so well with the contractions since she was able to respond to him nicely while having the contractions. However, he told Mommy that he was so afraid that Mommy will not have enough energy at the end to push me out (it would take 2 hours to push) if she would not take any pain drugs. So he offered the epidural. Daddy and Mommy hesitated to make this decision. But Mommy finally wanted a more comfortable birth and decided to take the pain drugs whenever possible. She thought that why not enjoy the experience a little. The nurse called the doctor and the anesthesiologist came and gave her the epidural. The shot did not hurt one bit and it took about 3 contractions before she did not feel them anymore. After the epidural went inside Mommy's body for about half an hour, the nurse checked on her again. And this time Mommy was 10 cm dilated and had no cervix left. And she was ready to push. The nurses told Mommy that she has hardly seen anyone dilate that fast.
However, Mommy had another problem. She realized that she could not push me if she did not feel anything. So she decided to ask the doctor to stop the epidural. And since she was ready to push, the doctor agreed to unplug the epidural. She started push around 2:30. At first it was not big deal, and as things progressed she realized that pregnancy was not so bad. Mommy had a very patient nurse. She helped Mommy a lot. The nurse kept telling Mommy to PUSH HARDER HARDER and HARDER for about more than an hour. Mommy prayed so hard during the pushing. The feeling of pushing was very satisfying. It felt good to push and she never thought that she would be saying that. But it was such a really overwhelming need to push the baby out. After a while of pushing, the nurse finally said that she could see the baby’s head now. So she called the doctor to come the birthing room again to get ready because Mommy needed an episiotomy.
For the first time, on the next contraction when Mommy did not think that she could push again. She pushed as hard as she could, and there I was! It was a boy! The time was 4:00 PM. She remembered being just so amazed that the little warm, slippery creature had just come out of her stomach and now was crying.
Daddy was so proud. Mommy felt that he didn't know what to do with himself. Mommy guessed she was too. She remembered Daddy said to Mommy that “our baby is so cute, honey”. Then he called the family members the great news. They came to the hospital few hours after my birth cheering. Daddy and Mommy were able to hold me (the little amazing guy) right after when I was born.
Mommy feels that she was so lucky that she had natural delivery. Overall though, it was well worth it and she loves being a Mommy.
Notes: If you are still reading this long story and are trying to become pregnant, please don't give up. It can be done and don't let anyone discourage you because of your size or weight either. Mommy weighed 118 lbs at her conception, gained 35 lbs during her pregnancy and has lost 24 pounds since her birth. She had no problems with her weight, blood pressure, diabetes or anything else. And her labor was only six hours from start to finish.
